WSET Level 3 in Wine Classroom course – starts 29th January 2023

Are you passionate about wine and want to have even more knowledge about the world of wine?  Then Level 3 in Wine is the right course for you.  This demanding course is suitable for knowledgeable wine lovers and wine students who aspire to work in the wine or hospitality industry.  It is strongly advised that students have completed Level 2 in Wine or a sommelier course prior to starting this course.  A total of six course days over a period of 3 months ensures students have sufficient time to study as well as continue with a full-time job.

WSET Level 3 in Wine provides advanced knowledge on wine from around the world with focus on the most important wine regions Europe, North & South America, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. During the course you will gain in-depth knowledge and insight into viticulture, wine production, and the different factors that influence wine styles and quality.

Level 3 in Wine builds on the basic knowledge gained from WSET Level 2 in Wine, and it is strongly recommended to take Level 2 first unless you have taken a sommelier course. During the course, students develop tasting techniques using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine (SAT).

During 6 full days of classroom teaching and tastings, we will cover the whole WSET Level 3 syllabus.  In addition to the classroom course, students are expected to use at least 60 hours of self-study in order to pass Level 3 in Wine.

Summary of course content:

  • How to accurately describe the key characteristics of wines and use this description to make an assessment of quality and readiness to drink using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting (SAT)
  • How to make appropriate wine recommendations
  • The principal natural and human factors in the vineyard and winery, and how these influence the production of still wines of the world.
  • How natural and human factors in the vineyard and winery influence style, quality, and wine prices
  • Identify the key characteristics of still wines produced in the principal wine-producing regions of the wines.
  • How key natural and human factors in addition to local laws and commerce influence the style and quality of wines
  • Key factors in the production of wine: location, grape growing (viticulture), winemaking, maturation and bottling.
  • Identify the key characteristics of the principal sparkling and fortified wines of the world and how natural and human factors, as well as wine laws, influence the style, quality, and price of these wines.

  • Sparkling wines of the world: Learn about the methods of production and the main styles of sparkling wines from the key wine producing countries: France, Spain, Italy, Germany, New World – Australia, California, New Zealand, South Africa.
  • Fortified wines of the world: Learn about the methods of production/main styles of fortified wines from the key wine countries: Spain, Portugal, France, Australia.
  • Labelling: learn how to decode and understand wine labels.
  • Learn how to make appropriate wine recommendations, and considerations with Food and Wine matching.
  • How to taste wines using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

How you will learn:

  • 6-day classroom course (36 hours) with engaging and interactive theory sessions, discussions and tasting practice with approx. 40 wines.
  • Course dates:  
    • Day 1 & Day 2: Sunday 29th and Monday 30th of January
    • Day 3: Monday 27th of February
    • Day 4: Monday 13th of March
    • Day 5: Monday 17th of April
    • Day 6: Monday 24th of April
  • Time: 09.00 – 16:30 all course days
  • Place: Klosteret Restaurant, Fredensborgveien 13, 0177, Oslo.  
  • Course materials include: WSET Level 3 in Wine coursebook and workbook, Systematic Approach to Tasting (SAT) card, WSET Level 3 in Wine Course Specifications.
  • Small classroom size to ensure sufficient learning and one-to-one interaction.

 

WSET Level 3 in Wine Exam

The Level 3 in Wine exam is divided into 2 sections:

  1. A thirty-minute blind-tasting exam of 2 wines
  2. A two-hour theory exam consisting of 50 multiple-choice questions and 4 short-written answer questions.

On successfully passing Level 3 in Wine, students are awarded the Level 3 in Wine certificate and pin.
