Two deliciously refreshing red wines from Rias Baixas, Galicia to tempt your taste buds

It’s not that many years ago that we began to see white wines from Rias Baixas appearing in Norway, namely, wines made from the native grape Albarino as well as white blends. These two delicious red wines however make a great alternative to other light-bodied reds such as Pinot Noir and Beuajolais Crus.

These less well-known however delicious and refreshing red wines make up a small percentage of the wines produced in Rias Baixas, which is probably not surprising considering this area is known for its rather cool, breezy and wet conditions in the north-west corner of Spain. With more recent advances in winemaking, these often very tannic indigenous grapes have become more groomed allowing them to show a more elegant yet vivacious expression.

About Rias Baixas

Rias Baixas, lies far to the west of Spain in the region of Galicia, and borders on northern Portugal. This area has a lot in common with Vinho Verde in the north of Portugal and shares a similar climate and grape varieties.

A couple of days ago I came across two red wines from Rias Baixas that I think are worth trying. Both these wines reflect their origin with quite racy acidity, juicy red fruits and light-bodied style – perfect for relaxed dining with pintxos/tapas for an evening with friends.

Deep purple colour. A youthful wine with lovely fresh aromas of blackberries, spice and garden herbs. On the palate very fresh acidity, lashings of juicy black fruit, hints of black pepper, lovely round soft tannins and a slight meaty note to the moderately long finish. Light-bodied with well-balanced 12.5% alcohol. A very refreshing wine, bursting with energy and really reflects its origin near the Atlantic coast. Made with a blend of local native grape varieties Espadiero, Pedral and Sousón.

Sitta, Finca el Molinero 2016, Attis Bodegas y Vinedos, Rías Baixas. Kr. 395,00

Bright ruby colour. Youthful wine with rosehip, spice and tempting meaty notes. On the palate, refreshing acidity, lovely ripe wild strawberries and rosehip fill the mid-palate, medium-bodied and supported by soft fine-grained tannins. Incredible – could almost think this is Pinot Noir! This is a real surprise and worthing trying. Grapes come from a single vineyard site (Finca el Molinero) and the wine is a blend of native Rias Baixas grapes Caino tinto Pedra and Brancellao. 13% abv.
