Mandagsvin: Blasson d´Issan 2017, Margaux, Bordeaux

Bordeaux can be a bit tricky to navigate when looking for good wines as you often need to know not only your grape varieties but also the producers.  There can be large variations in quality depending on where the grapes are grown, and individual producers.

Left Bank versus Right Bank

As a general rule, the wines of the right bank (including Saint-Èmilion, Pomerol, and Libournais) are dominated by softer and more red-fruited Merlot with additional support from small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon which give more freshness, tannins structure, and black fruit.

The wines of the left bank – Haut Medoc, Medoc, Pessac-Leognan and Graves tend to have more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend rather than Merlot.  In addition, small splatterings of Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Carmenere add complexity and interest.

Chateau d´Issan

Chateau d´Issan is a Third Growth Grand Cru Classé estate in Margaux and produces approximately 100,000 bottles per year. The Chateau has a very long history dating back to 1152 when its wine was served at the wedding of King Henry II to Eleanor of Aquitaine.

What is a Grand Cru Classé estate?

Grand Cru Classé when referring to estates from the Medoc, refers to the famous classification of 1855 in which the Chateaux of Bordeaux were ranked according to their price and perceived quality at the time.  The ranking today still stands as a benchmark for Bordeaux top quality wine however not all estates are seen as being equally important.

What is a second wine?

A second wine and hence the name Blasson d´Issan rather than Chateau d´Issan refers to the quality of the grapes that goes into the wine. Only the best of the best grapes from the Chateau estate go into the Grand Vin under the label of Chateau d´Issan.  A second wine often comes from younger vines and can offer very good value for money. These wines are often more approachable and ready to drink earlier than the Grand Vin.

What to expect from Margaux?

Margaux is often one of the most elegantly perfumed of the wines of the Medoc, showing more elegant silky tannins and more exuberance, and subtleties compared to Pauillac, St Julien or St Estephe.
